Bloated Linux
by usr_local in September 22nd, 2009
So what are you thoughts on Linux being bloated. This really needs to be broken down into two parts. Linux the kernel and Gnu/Linux the OS. The Linux kernel, which is really al that Linux is, had become larger by way of support for advancing technology. This is a good thing. Gnu/Linux has grown due to the fact that open source developers are building software to meet the needs of themselves and others. also a good thing. So, the question is posed in this post, will Linux become like Windows. There is no way that Linux can become like Windows. It will remain open source and produce a better computing environment as it grows.

To answer this question, two additional questions must first be answered; What does “bloated” mean? And, what does “like Windows” mean?
If bloated means size of code base, then Linux is not bloated. The linux kernel is just over 10million lines of code. The Windows XP NT kernel is 40-45million lines of code…and this is just the kernels.
If bloat is the size of a fully installed system…well..You can get a fully featured Linux install, including office suite, web browsers, graphics/sound/video editors, browsers, email, yadda yadda yadda into well under 5 GB of disk space. Try doing that with Windows Vista
As for “Like Windows”…well…it sort of is. You get a graphical interface, with “windows” and clicky buttons. You get great (and improving) driver support and a huge array of software to choose from… What you don’t get is a proprietary experience that is dictated to you.
